Welcome to Hartlepool Built
This website contains details of every ship built in Hartlepool and West Hartlepool from the 1830s to the 1960s when the last shipyards closed. The amount of information we have on individual ships varies, but where possible includes: ship specifications, owners, Masters, crew lists, photographs, plans and any other information that helps us build a full history of each vessel. Our small team of dedicated volunteers is working hard gathering information and adding it to the site. This takes time, however, so please be patient and revisit our site regularly, as it grows day-by-day. Although we make every effort to be accurate, it is inevitable that some errors may occur. If you are aware of any inaccuracies in our information, please contact us so that we can correct the details. We are always seeking more information to add to the site. If you have any relevant photographs, objects or simply memories of any Hartlepool-built ships and would like to share them with people around the world, we would love to hear from you. We have lots of information that we have not yet put online. So if you are looking for information about a ship, or perhaps trying to trace a sea-faring ancestor and can't find anything on the site, please get in touch. Please note that some of the early yardnumbers used on this website are 'unofficial' and are for site administration only. Latest news: Autumn 2009 Over the past few months we have held a series of Roadshows. These have been incredibly popular and thanks to all the people who came along with photographs, information, documents and memories to share. We will add them to the site as soon as possible. Progress so far... Our small team of willing volunteers is continuing to add basic information for every ship onto the site. We are just finishing adding name changes and end-of-service details. We have also begun adding change of ownership details and continue to add photographs. Our latest additions are some excellent photographs of the Empire Knoll and the Digby. These were kindly donated by two Hartlepool residents at one of our roadshows. Other images from the roadshows will be on the site shortly. Coming soon - crew lists! - very valuable to people researching their family tree. Also expect to see changes to the design of the website. We have been working with our web designers to make this site as easy to use as possible and we are confident our 'new look' will be a great success. Don't forget: if you need information but can't wait for it to appear on the site you can contact us. We are happy to provide whatever information we can and there are no fees apart from postage and copying.
